Overview

The LabVIEW DSC Module extends the LabVIEW graphical development environment with additional functionality for the rapid development of distributed measurement, control, and high-channel-count monitoring applications. The DSC Module enhances the LabVIEW shared variable, supports logging data to the Citadel and relational databases, enhances the Historical Data Viewer and the NI Distributed System Manager, and provides tools for graphing historical or real-time trends, enhancing the security of front panels, and writing custom I/O servers.

System Requirements

In addition to the system requirements for the LabVIEW Development System, the DSC Module has the following requirements:

  • LabVIEW 2021 Base, Full, or Professional Development System
  • At least 2.5 GB of disk space
  • 512 MB of RAM. NI recommends 1 GB of RAM.
  • Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 or later

Refer to the LabVIEW Readme for additional system requirements and supported operating systems for LabVIEW.

Note  The DSC Module is compatible with LabVIEW (32-bit) only. Therefore, you must have LabVIEW (32-bit) installed even if you use a 64-bit OS.

Supported Operating Systems

The DSC Module supports the following operating systems:

  • Windows 10 (version 1909)

Note  Refer to Unsupported Windows Operating Systems for more information about support for Microsoft Windows OSes.

Installation Instructions

NI installs the DSC Module using NI Package Manager. If you do not already have NI software installed, the DSC Module installs NI Package Manager to handle the installation of your NI software. Visit ni.com/r/NIPMDownload to download NI Package Manager. Refer to the NI Package Manager Manual for more information about installing, removing, and upgrading NI software using NI Package Manager.

You can also install LabVIEW and the DSC Module using the LabVIEW Platform media. To request additional LabVIEW Platform media, refer to the NI website.

Note  If you purchased this product with an NI Software Suite or NI Product Bundle, use the installation media that shipped with your purchase to install this product.

SQL Server Support

The LabVIEW 2021 DSC Module requires Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Service Pack 4 (SP4) Express. This component is installed by default when you install the DSC Module.

To install the LabVIEW 2021 DSC Module on a machine that has a previous version of the DSC Module installed, you need to upgrade the Microsoft SQL Server version from 2008 R2 to 2012 SP4 Express. Because upgrading the Microsoft SQL Server affects the Citadel database, you must backup your Citadel data before upgrading. Refer to the Archiving Citadel Data topic in the LabVIEW Help for detailed information about archiving the Citadel database.

Licensing

The DSC Module relies on licensing activation. When the evaluation period expires, you must activate a valid DSC Module license to continue using the DSC Module.

The NI OPC Servers application installed with the DSC Module provides a temporary license for a two-hour evaluation period. You must activate a valid license to continue using the NI OPC Servers application after the evaluation period expires.

Product Security and Critical Updates

Accessing the Help

Refer to the LabVIEW Help, accessible by selecting Help»LabVIEW Help, for information about the DSC Module.

Finding Examples

Select Help»Find Examples from LabVIEW to launch the NI Example Finder. LabVIEW examples for the DSC Module are located in the labview\examples\lvdsc directory. You can modify an example VI to fit an application, or you can copy and paste from one or more examples into a VI that you create.

Automating the Installation of NI Products

You can automate the installation of most NI products using command-line arguments to suppress some or all of the installer user interface and dialog boxes.

If the NI product you are installing uses Microsoft .NET 4.6.2, the .NET installer may run before any NI software installs and may require a reboot before the installation of NI software begins. To avoid a .NET reboot, install .NET 4.6.2 separately before you install NI software.

For more information about automating the installation of NI products, refer to Automating an Installer in the NI Package Manager manual.

Using NI Software with Microsoft Windows 10

Microsoft Windows 10 is the latest version of the Windows operating system and features significant changes compared to previous versions. Windows 10 introduces several new capabilities and also combines features from both Windows 7 and Windows 8. For more information about NI support for Windows 10, visit ni.com/windows10.

Unsupported Windows Operating Systems

The Advanced Signal Processing Toolkit no longer supports Windows Vista/XP/7/8.x, Windows Server 2003/2008/2012, or any 32-bit Windows operating system. Versions of this product that ship after May 1, 2021, may not install or execute correctly on these operating systems.
