Firmware Update when Bitfile Downloaded to Memory Can Cause Unrecoverable Error or Failed Software Installation

An unrecoverable error due to Safe Mode corruption can occur when updating firmware on certain RIO targets if a large bitfile is currently in flash memory. In some cases, the firmware update is successful and there is no unrecoverable error, but software installation on the target will fail. This issue only occurs in RIO targets with a Xilinx Zynq FPGA chip that have a large bitfile downloaded to flash memory.

Note: This is not the only cause of an unrecoverable error on RIO targets with Xilinx Zynq FPGA chips.

Workaround:

  • Unrecoverable Error (continuously flashing status LED): Contact National Instruments Technical Support and reference this Known Issue to receive the recovery instructions.
  • Software installation failure:  Recover in one of the following ways:
    • Revert to the older firmware version
    • Enable SSHD and manually remove the lvbitx file that was downloaded to memory in the /boot partition

The RIO Device Setup Utility reports an incompatible bitfile error when attempting to download a cRIO-9035 or cRIO-9039 bitfile.

The RIO Device Setup Utility reports an incompatible bitfile error when attempting to download a cRIO-9035 or cRIO-9039 bitfile to a cRIO-9035 (Sync) or cRIO-9039 (Sync) controller, respectively.

Workaround:

Use Measurement & Automation Explorer (MAX) or the CompactRIO web configuration utility to download a bitfile to flash.

The NI Single-Board RIO CLIP Generator application does not display a warning glyph for LVDS_25 if you select the Ethernet peripheral.

The NI sbRIO CLIP Generator does not warn a user that the LVDS_25 (2.5 V) signal is not allowed on the same bank as the Ethernet peripheral. The bank voltage for the Ethernet peripheral should remain at 1.8 V. Building a CLIP with this configuration causes a compilation error.

NI-MAX shows '1/1/0001 12:00:00AM' date for uploaded Wi-Fi certificates.

Wi-Fi certificates uploaded for cRIO-9032 or cRIO-9037 in NI-MAX show incorrect expiration date ‘1/1/0001 12:00:00AM’ causing Wi-Fi authentication to fail. This date can be observed in the “Not Valid After Date” field. This issue only affects PCs with LabVIEW 2015 SP1 and RIO 16.0.

Workaround:

Connect cRIO-9032 or cRIO-9037 to Wi-Fi networks that do not require Wi-Fi certificate. Alternatively, use an AP (Access Point) mode to connect host PC to cRIO.
Alternatively, upgrade to LabVIEW 2016 and RIO 16.0 to eradicate the issue.
