Handling Permission Requests

By default, NI VLM allows clients to ask for permissions (a request to be added) when they run Volume License Installers. The Volume License Installer presents the client with a dialog box that allows them to enter their user and computer information and select the groups for which to request permissions. A permission request containing that information is sent to NI VLM. Clients can also generate permission requests from within NI License Manager 3.5 or later.

Note NI VLM can be configured to email clients when their permission requests are handled, whether accepted or rejected. Refer to Configuring Email Server Settings for more information.

Setting Permission Request Handling

NI VLM 3.1 can handle the following types of permission requests:

  • NI VLM 3.x-formatted requests, such as permission requests from 3.x-version Volume License Installers and those generated by NI License Manager 3.5 and later
  • Legacy requests from Volume License Installers generated by NI VLM 2.x or earlier

Setting Handling for NI VLM 3. -Formatted Permission Requests

Depending on your selected settings, NI VLM handles permission requests containing groups using one of three methods, as follows:

  • Manual (System-wide Setting)—Lets you handle permission requests manually for all groups.
  • Automatic (System-wide Setting)—Sets NI VLM to handle permission requests automatically for all groups.
  • Set Individually—Lets you set permission request handling on a group-by-group basis. If you select this option, you set permission request handling at the time you create or edit a group.

Complete the following steps to specify how NI VLM handles permission requests containing groups:

  1. Select the Tools » Preferences menu item.
  2. Select General on the navigation tree.
  3. In the Groups section, set Permission Request Handling to Manual (System-wide Setting), Automatic (System-wide Setting), or Set Individually.
  4. Click Save.

Depending on your selected settings, NI VLM handles 3.x-formatted client information-only permission requests either automatically or manually. Complete the following steps to specify how NI VLM handles client information-only requests:

  1. Select the Tools » Preferences menu item.
  2. Select General on the navigation tree.
  3. In the Miscellaneous section, set Automatically handle client information-only requests to either Yes or No.
  4. Click Save.

Setting Handling for Legacy Permission Requests

Depending on your selected settings, NI VLM handles legacy permission requests either automatically or manually. Legacy permission requests are those generated by Volume License Installers created with NI VLM 2.x or earlier. These requests do not contain any group requests.

Complete the following steps to determine how NI VLM handles legacy requests:

  1. Select the Tools » Preferences menu item.
  2. Select General on the navigation tree.
  3. In the Miscellaneous section, set Automatically handle legacy permission requests to either Yes or No.
  4. Click Save.

Handling Permission Requests

You can set NI VLM to handle permission requests automatically or to let you handle permission requests manually.

Handling Requests Automatically—When a permission request arrives, the client information of the requesting client is added or updated, and the client is added automatically to the requested groups and licenses if enough seats are available. If there are no seats available or if there are any other problems with the request, it remains in Permission Requests until you can handle the request manually.

Note
  • Automatic permission request handling is disabled while NI VLM's user interface is open. Requests are stored in Permision Requests. You can either approve or deny requests while using NI VLM.
  • If NI VLM encounters a permission request that contains groups that include both manual and automatic permission handling, NI VLM will handle the automatic requests, but you will need to handle the manual requests separately.

Handling Requests Manually—If you select to handle requests manually, the requests are placed in Permission Requests, where you can accept, accept with changes, or reject requests on an individual basis.

Note Press and hold the <Ctrl> or <Shift> keys to select multiple permission requests.

You can choose to Accept or Reject all permission requests. If the request is accepted, all of the client information is imported into NI VLM, and the permissions for the requested groups and licenses are granted. If you reject the request, no information is imported into NI VLM and permissions for the requested groups and licenses are not granted.

You can also choose to Accept with Changes a 3.x-formatted permission request. This option allows you to edit user or computer information as well as add or remove any permissions before accepting the permission. Accept with Changes is not available for legacy permission requests.
