Configuring Email Server Settings

NI VLM uses the SMTP email server for the following features:

  • Administrator notifications
  • Emailing clients from within NI VLM
  • Emailing disconnected and home licenses to clients
  • Emailing clients when permission requests are handled
Note
  • Before configuring the email server, ensure that Full Name and Email exist in Custom Fields.
  • You may need to contact your network administrator to obtain SMTP server settings.

Complete the following steps to configure NI VLM with your SMTP server settings:

  1. Select the Tools » Preferences menu item.
  2. Select Email Server in the navigation tree.
  3. In the General section, set Enable email to Yes.
  4. In the Outgoing Mail Server Information section, enter the SMTP server address in the Server Address box. You can optionally specify a port number, for example, smtp.example.com:465. The default port is 25 if you are not using SSL/TLS encryption. If you are using SSL/TLS encryption, the default port is 465.
  5. Select whether to enable encryption in the Server requires encrypted connection setting.
  6. If the SMTP server requires authentication, enter your SMTP server Username and Password.
  7. Enter the sender's Name and Email. You can enter the same information as the General » Administrator Information setting, or you can specify a different name and email address.
  8. In the Options section, select Yes in Copy the administrator on every email sent by NI VLM to send a copy of each email that NI VLM sends to the person specified in the General » Administrator Information setting.
  9. In the Client Communications section, select Yes to automatically send clients an email when permission requests are either accepted or rejected.
  10. Click Send Test Email to test the email server settings.
    1. In the dialog box that appears, you can either use the existing administrator email address, if shown, or enter another email address at which you want to receive the test email.
    2. Click Send.
