Hardware Overview

The Radar Target Generation Software system includes the following hardware components.

Notice A system and the surrounding environment must meet the requirements defined in the specifications documents for each hardware component.

Component Description and Recommendations
PXI Chassis

A PXI chassis houses the RTG system and supplies power, communication, and timing/synchronization for the RTG functions.
Note NI recommends the PXIe-1092 and PXIe-1095 chassis. Refer to the VST hardware documentation for recommended model guidance.
Note You must use the PXIe-1092/1095 chassis with the timing and synchronization upgrade if the system includes mmWave radio heads. The timing and synchronization upgrade option is only available at the time of the PXI chassis purchase.
PXI Controller

A PXI controller, installed in the same PXI chassis as the VST instruments, interfaces with the instrument using NI device drivers.
Note NI recommends the PXIe-8881 PXI controller to meet system benchmark specifications.
Vector Signal Transceiver (VST) Instrument(s)

The VST instrument(s).
  • PXIe-5830—Select this model for 5 GHz to 12 GHz radar ranges.
  • PXIe-5831 or PXIe-5832 (IF Only or IF and mmWave)—Select of these models for 5 GHz to 21 GHz radar ranges. Using the PXIe-5831/5832 IF and mmWave Instrument configuration with two supported mmWave radio heads allows for greater radar ranges.
  • PXIe-5841 (with PXIe-5655)—Select this model for radar ranges below 6 GHz.
  • PXIe-5842 (VST Only)—Select this model for 30 MHz to 26.5 GHz radar ranges.
Note The VST instruments must be the same model and configuration if using multiple VSTs in the system.
Note If using the PXIe-5831/5832 with mmWave radio heads, you must use the IF and mmWave Instrument configuration that includes two mmRH-5582 radio heads with Direct TRX Ports (0-1).
(Optional) Coprocessor

Add the optional PXI High-Speed Serial Instrument to provide FPGA programming support for custom algorithms.

Note The PXIe-5842 VST only supports the PXIe-7903 coprocessor.

(Optional) Agile Attenuator

Add the optional PXIe-5699 to apply attenuation to improve the RTG system's dynamic range.
Note Refer to Agile Attenuator/Coprocessor Supported Hardware Configurations for a list of components.
(Optional) Agile Attenuator Connector Block

You must add the SCB-42 if your system includes the Agile Attenuator, a Coprocessor, and a PXIe-5830/5831/5832/5841 VST Instrument.

(Optional) Synchronization Module

Add the optional synchronization module for additional triggering connectivity in the system.
Note NI recommends the PXIe-6674T OCXO PXI Synchronization Module.
Test Fixture(s)

The user-supplied test fixture provides connectivity to/from the Device Under Test (DUT).
Cables and Accessories

Cables and accessories not included in the hardware kits that allow connectivity to/from the instruments for measurements.
