  • Nominal specifications describe an attribute that is based on design, conformance testing, or supplemental testing.
  • Measured specifications describe the measured performance of a representative model.

Specifications are Warranted unless otherwise noted.

Note The APS-4158/APS-4159 are not intended for use as a general-purpose power supply. Use only with approved NI auxiliary powered instrumentation.

Electrical

AC Input

Input voltage rating[1]1 Care must be taken to not exceed the current rating of the branch circuit providing power to the product. The APS-4159 has two internal power supply modules with individual AC inputs. Depending on the AC mains voltage, these dual supplies may need to be powered by separate branch circuits in high-power applications.

2,280 W, minimum

Note The APS-4158/APS-4159 is warranted to meet or exceed the minimum specifications at the minimum DC output voltage specification and warranted total available current. Typical specifications are based on nominal output voltage and warranted total available current.
Estimated total module output power

APS-4158

800 W, typical

APS-4159

1,600 W, typical

Note Estimated total module output power is intended to provide the user with a conservative estimate of the sum output power of modules that can be powered from a single APS-4158/APS-4159. This estimate makes assumptions about the bias power requirements and efficiency of modules and assumes the user is using the full output capacity of each module.

Performing a more detailed auxiliary power budget can allow better utilization of the auxiliary power supply. Refer to the specifications and user manuals of individual auxiliary powered modules for details on module power requirements and power budgeting guidance.

Output port protection

Overcurrent protection

Front panel Status LED indicates ALERT state.

Output port automatically disabled.

Finite automatic recovery period followed by latched protection (port cable detect cycle, soft power cycle, or soft reset required). Backup fuse protection (not user serviceable).

Overvoltage protection

Front panel Status LED indicates ALERT state.

Output port automatically disabled.

Finite automatic recovery period followed by latched protection (port cable detect cycle, soft power cycle, or soft reset required).

Internal supply protection

Overcurrent protection (DC output)

Rear panel power supply LED indicates ALERT/FAULT state based on magnitude of detected overcurrent condition.

No automatic action for ALERT conditions, FAULT condition disables 48 V output from internal power supply module. All ports disabled if all internal power supply modules are in FAULT state.

Automatic recovery from ALERT state, FAULT state recovery requires soft power cycle or hard power cycle.

Overvoltage protection (AC input)

Rear panel power supply LED indicates ALERT/FAULT state based on magnitude of detected overvoltage condition.

No automatic action for ALERT conditions, FAULT condition disables 48 V output from internal power supply module and internal standby power. All ports disabled and no LED indication if all internal power supply modules are in FAULT state.

Automatic Recovery from ALERT state. Latched protection for FAULT condition, recovery requires a hard power cycle.

Overvoltage protection (DC output)

Rear panel power supply LED indicates ALERT/FAULT state based on magnitude of detected overvoltage condition.

No automatic action for ALERT conditions, FAULT condition disables 48 V output from internal power supply module. All ports disabled if all internal power supply modules are in FAULT state.

Automatic recovery from ALERT state, FAULT state recovery requires soft power cycle or hard power cycle.

Overtemperature protection (intake and internal circuitry)

Rear panel power supply LED indicates ALERT/FAULT state based on magnitude of detected overtemperature condition.

No automatic action for ALERT conditions, FAULT condition disables 48 V output from internal power supply module. All ports disabled if all internal power supply modules are in FAULT state.

Automatic recovery from ALERT state, FAULT state recovery requires soft power cycle or hard power cycle.

Fan failure

Rear panel power supply LED indicates ALERT/FAULT state based on whether one or both fans internal to a power supply module have failed.

No automatic action for ALERT conditions, FAULT condition disables 48 V output from internal power supply module. All ports disabled if all internal power supply modules are in FAULT state.

Automatic recovery from ALERT state, FAULT state recovery requires soft power cycle or hard power cycle.

Note The ALERT state corresponds to a red flashing Status LED. The FAULT state corresponds to a solid red Status LED.

Depending on the fault condition one or more of the following recovery mechanisms must be used:

  • Port Cable Detect Cycle—A port cable detect cycle is performed by physically unplugging the cable from the APS-4158/APS-4159 port for at least 1 second and then reconnecting the cable. Cycling the port cable detect clears recoverable errors on the port and reenables the port without impacting other ports.
  • Soft Reset—A soft reset is performed when the power button is held for at least 5 seconds and then released while the APS-4158/APS-4159 is in the active state. A soft reset clears recoverable port faults and reenables ports without impacting active ports that are not in a fault condition.
  • Soft Power Cycle—A soft power cycle is performed by pressing the front panel power button while the APS-4158/APS-4159 is in the active state to place the unit in the standby state and then pressing the button again to return to the active state. A soft power cycle results in all ports being disabled while in the standby state which will trigger error responses on any modules connected to output ports of the unit.
  • Hard Power Cycle—A hard power cycle is performed by removing all AC power input from the APS-4158/APS-4159, waiting at least 15 seconds, then reconnecting AC power input and pressing the front panel power button to return the unit to the active state.
Note The INHIBIT input pin of the rear-panel 15-pin remote control connector can be used in place of the front panel switch for automation purposes when the INHIBIT MODE input is set to the appropriate level to enable remote operation. Refer to the APS-4158/APS-4159 user manual for additional information.
Note

The dual internal power supply modules of the APS-4159 operate redundantly. If one supply is in the FAULT state, the other supply can continue to operate as long as input/output conditions for that supply do not also force it into a FAULT state. The front panel Status LED will indicate ALERT state when one supply is in FAULT and the other is operating normally. Ports are not disabled unless both supplies are in the FAULT state.

The APS-4158 has a single internal power supply. The front panel Status LED will indicate ALERT/FAULT status when the rear panel LED of the power supply is indicating ALERT/FAULT status.
